A Year of Hikes in review…
Like choosing a favorite child, it is hard for me to pick the favorite hike of 2018. I have been so fortunate to hike so many trails this past year with some of the people most important to me in the world. And many of the trails, I’ve hiked several times.
What makes a hike/trail a favorite? For me, it is the scenery, the workout and the company. And believe me, in 2018, I’ve had some of the best.
But to narrow it down, well, that is hard.
May 2018 took me to Colorado to celebrate Mother’s Day with my eldest, Eliza. She introduced me to Rampart Reservoir https://www.visitcos.com/directory/rampart-reservoir/
Rampart has some of the most amazing scenery that I have ever seen and the workout can be as easy or as challenging as you want. And of course, it was great spending time with my daughter. Our pace is pretty even which is great fun.
Rams Head hike in the USVI National Park on St. John USVI is a steep uphill climb at parts but at 2.3 miles one way, it is a great morning hike with insane views. You can spot several British Virgin Islands and just take in the miles and miles of ocean views. I had the great pleasure of hiking it four times this year, twice with Eliza and twice with my husband, Paul.
Event wise, participating in the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy’s Challenge was an accomplishment because the terrain was wet and muddy this year. Oh wait, I guess that is what it is like every year! I had the extreme joy of hiking with one of my son’s best friends which meant a great day of bonding with a young man that I love. Happy to have finished the Homestead Challenge with Connor as my hiking buddy. https://rachelcarsontrails.org/
Everyday hikes are usually at North Park, a nearby Allegheny County Park here in the Pittsburgh area. It is so close, and I can get in a quick 5-mile hike by myself or a longer hike with friends and family. I’m so blessed to have such a resource so handy. http://www.alleghenycounty.us/parks/north-park/index.aspx
What was your favorite hike(s) for 2018?
